Gentle Green Smoothie with Pear Ginger and Lemon

The gentle pear may not be the first fruit that comes to mind when dreaming up smoothies, but its delicate sweetness and creamy texture create a beverage that is first rate, particularly when combined with the subtle heat of ginger and the brightness of lemon. This will easily become your new morning favorite.

Some days are met with resistance.

The alarm goes off but my body fights it, struggling to stay submerged beneath the heavy, formless world of my dreams.

It’s as though I know, even before waking, that the pain will be there, waiting for me. That I will sit up and gravity will press down on me like lead and my head will throb. A dull, persistent ache will lodge itself between my shoulder blades as I rise, twist around my spine, burrow deep within my knees, my hips and the soles of my feet – and will follow me throughout the day, always present, like a shadow.

Sometimes it is hard to meet this.

But the world, pain or no, cannot be put off.  Life is waiting to be lived. And I have learned, that the very best strategy of all, is sometimes just to put one foot in front of the other, to keep moving forward, to endure.

On these days, when the world feels difficult to face, I find this smoothie to be a comfort. The flavors are soft and gentle, the ginger warm and reassuring and the lemon bright and fresh. It kindles a fire in my belly and leaves me feeling refreshed and revitalized. You may not think that pear could carry its weight in a smoothie; but it does so beautifully. The delicate, floral sweetness really shines.

It’s reassuring somehow, this unglamorous and bruised piece of fruit, turning into something sublime.

Gentle green smoothie w/ pear, ginger and lemon

Prep Time 5 min • Total Time 5 min

 

serves 2

  • 1 ripe pear

  • 1/4 avocado

  • 4 cups (70 g) fresh or frozen spinach

  • .35 oz (10 g) fresh ginger (about a thumb sized piece)

  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

  • juice of 1/2 a lemon

  • 1 1/2 cups (350 ml) water or coconut water

 


  1. Remove the seeds and stem from the pear and slice into large chunks. 

  2. Add the pear to the blender with the remaining ingredients and process on high until the mixture is completely smooth, about 2 minutes. Divide between 2 glasses and enjoy.


Notes:

  • Please adjust the ginger to your personal preference. I tend to like things on the gingery side, so if you do not, I'd suggest adding just a very small piece to start with.
