In Season Now:
As Nigel Slater says, A bag of cherries is a bag of happiness. With their glossy, lipstick red sheen and deep, carmine juices that stain your fingertips, it is almost impossible not to feel your cares slip away just a little when a bowl of cherries is in your midst. Here’s how I like to use them:
A cherry smoothie is fleeting summertime treat (unless you are smart enough to freeze some for the rest of the year). I combine 2 cups of cherries with a handful of oats, a spoonful of cashew butter and a drop or two of almond extract with milk of choice.
Combined with salty or pungent cheeses like haloumi, goat’s cheese or feta, the sweet-sharp notes of the cherry offer a vibrant contrast that is a thing of beauty.
No need to get sophisticated; a bar of dark chocolate and a bag of sweet cherries enjoyed together is hard to improve upon.
